Once regarded as one of China’s toughest rivals in the World Cup qualifiers, Indonesia has now crashed out of the race. Following China’s elimination, attention on Indonesia also waned — and with two consecutive defeats, their World Cup dream has come to an abrupt end.

Since Erick Thohir took over as President of the Indonesian Football Association, he launched an aggressive naturalization campaign, bringing in a wave of Dutch-born talents. The team’s transformation was remarkable — almost a complete overhaul — earning them the title of “the most European-style team in Southeast Asia.” Yet despite the talent, results failed to match expectations.

Indonesian media outlets are now flooded with reflections and criticism, arguing that the real problem was not the players, but the coach selection.
