“Big screens are the true future of long-form video.”

A new report from Entertainment Capital Theory reveals that China’s smart screen ecosystem now reaches 1.197 billion people—more than the total number of internet users.
Amid this massive reach, one hidden segment is rapidly transforming into a goldmine: commercial hotel screens.

Across hotels, homestays, e-sports rooms, KTVs, and massage centers, more than 22 million screens are in active use—driving an emerging 6-billion-yuan market, not counting hardware sales.

From Decoration to Revenue Generator

Once seen as mere room decor, hotel TVs are now becoming key gateways for entertainment, advertising, and service integration.

According to Xiaoshuai Technology, a leading system integrator, there are over 20 million hotel rooms nationwide, with 1.3 million using their system. Guests spend about 3 hours per session watching content—more than half via on-demand movies, with male-oriented dramas like Joy of Life and Blossoms Shanghai dominating viewership.

Following strict reforms by China’s broadcasting regulator, hotel TVs now feature simplified operation, ad-free startup, and single-remote control, boosting the average activation rate to over 80%.

A New Industry Chain Is Emerging

The hotel screen ecosystem has evolved into a full-fledged industry network involving:

  • Integrators such as Xiaoshuai, Xielv, and YingSu Smart Link, offering SaaS and content delivery;
  • Hardware makers like TCL, Hisense, and Skyworth, providing commercial-grade TVs;
  • Content providers like Tencent Video, Youku, and Jetson Media, ensuring licensed distribution.

This ecosystem is now recognized as the “fourth major distribution channel”—after theaters, TV networks, and OTT platforms.

Copyright Reform and Market Standardization

Legal disputes have accelerated industry regulation. A 2023 Supreme Court ruling clarified that hotels using legally purchased streaming equipment do not infringe copyrights, setting a precedent for fair, compliant operation.

Beyond Hotels: Expanding Horizons

The demand for commercial big screens is also booming in spas, elderly care centers, hospitals, and entertainment venues.
As cloud gaming, AI interactivity, and in-room entertainment evolve, these screens are becoming the next-generation experience hubs.

“Whoever unites the ecosystem—hardware, content, and services—will define the next era of China’s big-screen economy,”
said Xiaoshuai Technology CEO Ma Xiaoshuai.
