Think your heartburn or bloating is just from late-night snacks? The real culprit could be Helicobacter pylori (Hp) — a tiny bacterium with serious consequences.

A new study from Peking University Third Hospital found that using China’s new drug Rifutonidazole, combined with rabeprazole and amoxicillin for 14 days, can achieve a 92% eradication rate, marking a breakthrough in Hp treatment.

The Hidden Villain in Your Stomach

Discovered in 1982 (a finding that won the Nobel Prize), Hp is the main cause of chronic gastritis, ulcers, and even gastric cancer.
Globally, infection rates hover around 50% — in some parts of China, over 70%. Most infections start in childhood and persist for life if untreated.

How it spreads:

  • 🍽 Oral-to-oral: sharing utensils, kissing, pre-chewing food for children
  • 🚿 Fecal-to-oral: contaminated food or water

No Symptoms ≠ No Risk

Around 70% of carriers have no symptoms, yet long-term infection can silently damage the stomach lining and increase cancer risk.
Experts recommend treatment upon detection, regardless of symptoms.

Treatment and Prevention

The standard bismuth-based quadruple therapy (bismuth + PPI + 2 antibiotics) lasts 10–14 days, with success rates above 90%.
Reinfection is rare (1.7%–2.8%), but hygiene and separate dining remain key.
