Japan’s First Exit! Shinozuka Falls to Lin Yun-Ju in a Five-Set Thriller

On November 5th, at the WTT Frankfurt Champions Men’s Singles Round of 32, Japan’s rising star Hiroto Shinozuka fought valiantly but was edged out 2–3 by Taiwan’s top-ranked ace, Lin Yun-Ju. The scoreline read 11–8, 4–11, 6–11, 11–9, 9–11. With this narrow defeat, Shinozuka became the first Japanese player to exit the tournament — and for the first time in his European tour, he bowed out in the opening round.

Lin Yun-Ju, 24, currently ranked No. 11 in the world, boasts an impressive 67% winning rate in WTT events and remains the undisputed leader of Team Chinese Taipei. In contrast, the 21-year-old Shinozuka, ranked No. 29, holds a 53% win rate. Though the odds were against him, he delivered an inspired performance that showcased his grit and potential.

The match was a roller coaster from start to finish. Shinozuka took the first game 11–8 after a brilliant comeback from 5–8 down, but Lin quickly regained control, winning the next two games. Refusing to back down, Shinozuka fought hard to take the fourth game 11–9, forcing a deciding fifth. In the final set, he surged ahead 3–0 early on, only to be edged out 9–11 in heartbreaking fashion.

This loss marks a continued slump for the young Japanese player — he has now exited in the first round in five of his last seven tournaments:
