Kai-Fu Lee, often hailed as China’s “AI Godfather,” is leading 01.AI through a major strategic shift. Once focused on developing massive proprietary models, the company is now embracing open-source AI Agents—a pragmatic pivot driven by cost and market realities.

Founded in 2023, 01.AI once aimed to build an “AI 2.0 platform,” earning Alibaba Cloud’s early investment and launching its Yi model series. But as training costs soared and funding slowed, the company cut its pretraining teams and shifted focus to integrating open-source models for real-world applications.

At the GOTC Summit, Lee announced the “Open AgentKit (OAK)” platform, an open-source one-stop solution for AI Agent development. “Open-source models are the best foundation for building intelligent agents,” Lee stated, marking a new phase emphasizing collaboration and commercial viability over size.

Despite executive departures and financial pressure, Lee remains confident: “We’re not giving up—we’re moving forward smarter.” In China’s cooling AI startup scene, his pivot may prove to be the wisest move yet.
