Massive X4.0 Solar Flare from Active Region 14274—China Meteorological Administration Warns of Communication Disruptions

According to the National Space Weather Monitoring and Warning Center of the China Meteorological Administration, a powerful X4.0-class solar flare erupted from solar active region 14274 at 16:30 Beijing time on November 14.
This marks the fifth X-class flare produced by this active region during the current solar rotation. As the Sun continues to turn, the region responsible for these intense eruptions will soon rotate out of Earth’s visible view.
Because the flare occurred during daytime across most parts of China, rapid changes in the ionospheric environment caused by heightened solar radiation may temporarily affect short-wave radio communications.
The eruption also generated a coronal mass ejection (CME). However, since the flare originated from the Sun’s northeastern limb, the trajectory of the ejected material is angled away from Earth.
Even so, forecasters expect a geomagnetic disturbance may reach Earth in the coming days. The intensity is projected to be mild, offering what many “aurora chasers” might consider a rare chance to rest after days of pursuing the spectacular northern lights.
Meteorologists estimate that overall solar activity will remain low over the next three days, with a low probability of additional M-class or stronger flares. A minor geomagnetic storm may occur between November 16 and 17, while other periods will see geomagnetic conditions ranging from quiet to slightly unsettled.
High-energy proton flux above 10 MeV in geostationary orbit is expected to stay at background levels, while high-energy electrons above 2 MeV will remain at moderate daily integral flux levels. Ionospheric weather is forecast to remain largely calm.
Solar flares are among the most explosive and energetic phenomena in the Sun’s atmosphere. They occur when intense magnetic forces release vast amounts of energy in a short burst, producing enhanced radiation across multiple wavelengths alongside rapid particle acceleration and plasma motion.
Fortunately, Earth’s atmosphere and magnetic field provide a strong protective shield, meaning such events typically have limited impact on people at ground level.
Macron: Trump Finally Sees Through Putin's Lies, Urges Tougher Sanctions
On May 25, Russia launched large-scale missile and drone attacks on Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine, killing at least 12 people. U.S. President Donald Trump publicly condemned Putin's actions, expressed anger, and said he was considering additional sanctions. During his visit to Vietnam, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Trump has finally realized that Putin has been lying and urged him to turn his anger into concrete actions to push for tougher sanctions against Russia. Macron also called for setting a final deadline, after which more severe retaliatory measures should be taken if Putin continues his aggression. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other officials reiterated that Russia's attacks are war crimes and urged the international community not to remain silent.
