A Stunning 60% Price Surge: Major Shockwave Hits the Storage Chip Market!

On November 14, China’s A-share storage-chip sector suffered a sharp downturn, with several major stocks—including Bywin Storage, Longsys, and Puran Microelectronics—plunging more than 10%.
The immediate trigger came from Kioxia Holdings. After the company’s weaker-than-expected second-quarter earnings dragged down U.S. storage-chip shares, it also triggered a heavy sell-off in China’s storage-chip market.
Driven by rapid advances in AI this year, the global storage industry has entered a new high-growth cycle, sending memory prices climbing quarter after quarter. But as skepticism toward AI’s sustainability grows, both capital markets and industry insiders are now sharply divided over the future trajectory of storage prices.
Notably, on November 14, media reports revealed that Samsung Electronics sharply raised the price of several memory chip products this month—up to 60% higher than September—due to strong data-center demand and tight supply.
This news sent Micron’s stock surging 4.17% on the day, bringing its year-to-date gains to an impressive 194.49%.
KIOXIA MISSES EXPECTATIONS
STORAGE STOCKS TUMBLE
On November 13, Kioxia reported second-quarter revenue of 448.3 billion yen, below the market consensus of 461.1 billion yen and down 6.8% year-on-year. Adjusted net profit came in at just 40.7 billion yen, a steep 60%+ plunge, also missing expectations.
Although Kioxia’s Tokyo-listed shares slipped only 1.62%, its U.S. ADR collapsed overnight, triggering a chain reaction across U.S. storage stocks. Western Digital fell 5.39%, Seagate dropped 7.31%, and Micron slid 3.25%.
When markets opened on November 14, Kioxia’s Tokyo stock immediately nosedived more than 23% in early trading and briefly hit its limit-down level.
The shock quickly spread to China’s A-share market. By the close, Tongyou Technology, Bywin Storage, Longsys, and Puran Micro all dropped more than 10%, while 13 other storage names—including Konka Electronics, GigaDevice, Shannon Semiconductor, and Demingli—fell over 7%.
Reports suggest Kioxia’s disappointing earnings may be linked to its fixed-price supply agreement with Apple for mobile NAND chips. With spot prices soaring globally, such fixed pricing left Kioxia unable to benefit from the market’s sharp upswing.
However, industry experts note that Kioxia’s fiscal Q2 corresponds to July 1–September 30. Since the major price hikes only began in September and apply to Q4 delivery orders, the gains have not yet been reflected in Kioxia’s Q2 financials.
Market data shows the global storage sector began entering a broad price-hike phase in Q2. Micron issued a price-increase notice at the end of March. SanDisk raised prices 10% from April 1. Samsung reached DRAM price-increase agreements with major clients in early May. Still, the real surge began in Q3.
With this backdrop, several overseas analysts are optimistic that Kioxia’s performance in the next quarter (its fiscal Q3, corresponding to Q4 shipments) will improve significantly.
PRICES UP AS MUCH AS 60%
SAMSUNG'S NEW MEMORY QUOTES REVEALED
After pausing its October DDR5 DRAM contract pricing and telling customers it had “no stock to sell,” Samsung finally released its new November quotes—showing massive increases across the board.
According to reports on November 14, Samsung has raised November contract prices for some memory products by 30% to 60% compared with September, driven by AI-related supply shortages.
For example, 32GB DDR5 modules jumped from $149 to $239, a surge of more than 60%. Prices for 16GB and 128GB DDR5 rose about 50%, while 64GB and 96GB modules increased more than 30%.
“Many large server manufacturers and data-center builders now accept the reality that they simply cannot get enough supply. The premiums they’re paying are extremely high,” said Tobey Gonnerman, president of Fusion Worldwide.
Typically, Samsung updates its memory contract pricing monthly. But when Samsung paused its October DDR5 pricing, SK Hynix and Micron followed suit, delaying pricing updates until mid-November and causing DDR5 spot prices to soar 25% in just one week.
TrendForce analyst Ellie Wang noted that Samsung is “very confident” in continued price increases, largely because demand remains exceptionally strong and customers are negotiating long-term supply agreements extending to 2026–2027.
This month’s increases are concentrated in DDR5 DRAM, the core component of AI servers. With supply severely constrained, upstream manufacturers are prioritizing top tech giants and first-tier cloud companies. DDR5 production for regular customers has virtually dried up, pushing the storage market firmly into “seller’s market” territory.
Samsung declined to comment, but industry executives and analysts agree that the shortage is severe enough to trigger waves of panic buying among customers.
A FULL-SCALE PRICE WAVE?
NAND MARKET ALSO HEATING UP
According to a November 14 report by Korea’s Chosun Ilbo, Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Kioxia are planning coordinated price increases for NAND flash memory.
All four major NAND producers—Samsung, SK Hynix, Kioxia, and Micron—have already cut supply this year. Analysts say the strategy serves two purposes: stabilizing and lifting prices, and reallocating production capacity toward QLC processes to meet AI-related demand, which naturally reduces overall NAND output.
The report also noted that large North American tech companies, worried about future NAND price spikes, have begun stockpiling aggressively. Some suppliers’ 2025 NAND allocations have already sold out.
Omdia’s annual NAND production estimates show Samsung lowering its 2024 wafer output target from 5.07 million to 4.72 million (a 7% cut). Kioxia trimmed output from 4.8 million to 4.69 million wafers. SK Hynix reduced production by about 10%, while Micron’s Singapore Fab 7 is holding steady at around 300,000 wafers.
Just days earlier, SanDisk raised NAND contract prices by as much as 50%, sending shockwaves throughout the industry and prompting many module makers to suspend deliveries and reevaluate pricing.
With these developments, NAND average selling prices are rising quickly. TrendForce reported on November 14 that strong contract-market momentum is now fueling the spot market as well. With small and midsize buyers unable to secure supply directly from manufacturers, they are turning to the spot market—where shortages, optimistic price expectations, and cautious selling are pushing prices steadily higher.
