On November 16, Lei Jun posted a series of updates on Weibo, reiterating Xiaomi’s core philosophy in automotive safety design. He addressed comments stemming from an interview in April last year, in which he remarked that “a car’s appearance comes first” when discussing product definition. Lei Jun questioned whether this statement contradicts Xiaomi’s long-standing position that “safety is the foundation and the prerequisite.” In the same interview, he mentioned that wheel design is one of the most difficult aspects of automotive styling and asked, “What’s wrong with that?”
He included screenshots of four Weibo posts from 2023 and 2024, emphasizing that these were published before the launch of the Xiaomi SU7. In them, he had openly discussed his views on safety and the rigorous standards behind the SU7’s development. Lei Jun has repeatedly stressed in past statements that “safety comes above everything.”
Some netizens commented that his earlier remarks were being taken out of context, with one user saying, “People keep twisting your words, claiming Xiaomi cares more about looks than safety.” Lei Jun replied firmly, “Safety is the foundation, safety is the prerequisite.”
Another user added, “Lei, no matter what you say, people will cherry-pick your words on purpose.” Lei Jun responded by pointing out that “a lot of people online are misinterpreting, distorting, and smearing things,” once again reaffirming Xiaomi’s unwavering stance on automotive safety.
