Gattuso says that Italy are fully prepared to face a physically strong and determined Northern Ireland side.

(Reuters) Italy have drawn Northern Ireland in the playoffs for the 2026 World Cup, and head coach Gennaro Gattuso stressed that although their opponents are physically strong and highly resilient, Italy are fully prepared for the challenge.

Italy were eliminated in the playoffs in the last two World Cup cycles, losing to Sweden and North Macedonia. Even though they avoided both teams in this draw, Gattuso remains cautious as Northern Ireland have not qualified for the World Cup since 1986.

“Northern Ireland are a physically powerful team and they never give up,” he said.

“We have to play this match with full commitment. I’ve been saying for three months that we knew we would have to go through the playoffs… We look to the future with confidence.”

After missing both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, Italy are determined to return to the global stage for the first time since 2014.

If they defeat Northern Ireland, Italy will face Wales or Bosnia in the playoff final for a place in the World Cup.

Italy dismissed former coach Luciano Spalletti in June. Although Gattuso led the team to five straight wins after taking charge, a heavy 4–1 loss to Norway in the final qualifier left Italy second in their group, forcing them into the playoffs.

Reflecting on the defeat, Gattuso said: “We must work on fixing our vulnerabilities. We’ve shown that when we get things right, we can compete with anyone.

“Of course, we must not repeat the mistakes we made a few days ago. Improving that is my top priority.”

The 2026 World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19 in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
