(Hong Kong, 23rd) According to the 2025 “Savings Security Index” survey released by the Hong Kong Deposit Protection Board, average monthly savings among Hong Kong residents have exceeded HK$10,000 for the first time—marking a record high.
However, IPP Financial Advisers director Pang Wing Tung said the figures reflect not only a more cautious savings mindset, but also structural challenges. In a changing interest-rate environment, relying solely on cash deposits may not be sufficient to ensure long-term financial security.
Pang noted that strong savings among the 18–29 age group do not necessarily indicate higher incomes, but rather lighter financial burdens and more flexible spending patterns. Starting early, he said, allows young savers to leverage the power of compounding, building a stronger financial foundation for goals such as home ownership, entrepreneurship or retirement.
Deposits alone may not keep pace with inflation
The survey also showed that more than 70% of respondents rely mainly on savings or fixed deposits. Pang warned that with Hong Kong’s inflation rate estimated at around 1.1% in 2025, low-interest deposits could gradually erode purchasing power over time.
Even for conservative investors, he suggested allocating part of their savings into diversified assets such as bonds, savings-oriented insurance products or other relatively stable-return instruments to improve overall capital efficiency.
Pang also highlighted that over 70% of respondents save without a clear objective. Setting specific, measurable goals—such as saving for travel within three years, a home down payment within five years, or long-term retirement planning—can significantly improve financial discipline.
“Clear goals not only boost motivation but also allow individuals to track progress and stay disciplined,” he said.
Amorim Lays Down the Law: Rashford and Three Others Dropped from Preseason Squad, Demoted Unless Transferred
New Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim has excluded Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, and Jadon Sancho from the club’s preseason training camp. Unless they secure transfers soon, they will be relegated to the reserves. United aims to cash in over £100 million from these players, but several moves have stalled. Rashford is holding out for Barcelona and has turned down a loan to Newcastle.
