Barcelona Presidential Race Heats Up Early: Five Potential Candidates Emerge Ahead of 2026 Election

Although FC Barcelona has yet to officially announce the election date, the race for the club’s 2026 presidential election has effectively begun. Five prospective candidate platforms have already declared their intentions: Som un Clam, Nosaltres, Xavier Vilajoana, Moviment 42, and current president Joan Laporta.
Under club statutes, the election must take place between March 15 and June 15, 2026, with April being the preferred window. Once the date is confirmed, candidates will have 40 days to gather the required member signatures. The previous election in March 2021 saw Laporta defeat Víctor Font and Toni Freixa.
Key developments among the five contenders include:
Joan Laporta: Seeking Re-election
Following Barcelona’s La Liga title on May 16, 2025, Laporta confirmed his intention to run again, aiming to complete the roadmap launched in 2021. Strong on-field results, progress at Spotify Camp Nou, and a stable relationship with head coach Hansi Flick have strengthened his position.
Víctor Font: Relaunching with “Nosaltres”
Font, Laporta’s main challenger in 2021, returned with a new platform in November 2025. His project emphasizes member-centric governance, transparency, and cultural preservation. While former coach Xavi attended the launch, Font later clarified he is not part of the plan.
Xavier Vilajoana: Calling for Professional Governance
Vilajoana announced his candidacy again in November 2025, promoting a shift away from what he describes as “family-style” management toward a professionalized club structure.
Marc Ciria: “Moviment 42” and the Messi Proposal
Economist Marc Ciria entered the race in December, arguing that Lionel Messi’s return is essential to restoring Barcelona’s financial and symbolic strength. His platform focuses on membership ownership, cultural identity, and economic competitiveness.
Joan Camprubí: “Som un Clam”
Backed by a historic Barça lineage, Camprubí has positioned his movement as an emotional call to unity, urging opposition forces to align against Laporta.
As the election approaches, the debate over Barcelona’s future governance, identity, and strategic direction is rapidly intensifying.
