Over the past year and more, ChatGPT has continued to iterate at a rapid pace. It’s no longer positioning itself as a single-purpose conversational assistant, but evolving toward a broader platform that spans social interaction, community collaboration, and shopping decision-making.

Recent updates include multi-user shared conversations through group chats, cross-session memory, customizable “GPT” role-based experiences, and deeper integration with e-commerce ecosystems.

To justify trillion-dollar expectations, ChatGPT can’t remain a standalone tool. It has to become a platform—challenging search, stepping into social, and pushing into commerce—effectively walking the same path that internet super-platforms traveled before.

01 The Evolution of Social Interaction and Community Features

Toward the end of 2025, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT group chats, allowing multiple people to interact with ChatGPT within the same shared conversation. Users can invite friends, family, or coworkers into a common space to plan events, brainstorm ideas, and even ask the AI to support group decisions.

For example, a group of friends can collaborate with ChatGPT to plan a weekend trip—comparing destinations, drafting an itinerary, and generating a packing checklist—all within a single thread.

Group chat conversations are separated from private, individual chats, helping ensure that each user’s personal ChatGPT memory does not spill over to others. Users can invite roughly 1–20 participants via a share link, and can set group avatars and nicknames to make it easier to identify who’s involved.

Notably, ChatGPT is also optimized for multi-person dynamics. It can decide when to respond and when to stay quiet based on the flow of the group conversation, and it supports @mentions (e.g., “@ChatGPT”) so users can explicitly call the assistant into the discussion.

The launch of group chat marks a meaningful shift: ChatGPT is moving from a one-on-one interface into a multi-user collaboration space—hinting at a future where AI becomes part of how people communicate and coordinate together.

To further support longer-term collaboration, OpenAI also rolled out “Projects,” a workspace that functions like an intelligent shared folder. Projects can group multiple chats, files, and context into one place, making it easier to run ongoing work over weeks or months.

Within a project, users can upload reference materials (PDFs, spreadsheets, images, and more) and add project-specific instructions so ChatGPT can retain background details and preferences within that workspace.

Because chats and files stored in Projects are remembered in that environment, ChatGPT can carry forward context without “forgetting” prior discussions—making the experience more continuous and useful. More importantly, Projects support sharing, particularly for paid plans in business and education contexts, enabling teams to work together in the same project space.

For instance, a team could share a “Marketing Plan” project where discussion logs and draft documents live in one place. ChatGPT can then provide copy suggestions in a consistent tone, while teammates can seamlessly continue where others left off.

Shared Projects can also assign permissions—such as view-only access versus editing rights—so collaboration stays controlled and secure. Taken together, these capabilities are turning ChatGPT into a collaborative workspace that supports group communication, resource sharing, and co-creation—pushing it further toward community-oriented tooling.

02 Entering Shopping Decisions: ChatGPT as an E-Commerce Assistant

More and more users have started treating ChatGPT as a shopping advisor, with hundreds of millions of people asking for product guidance each week. OpenAI has leaned into this behavior by connecting ChatGPT to real-time product data and shopping information.

When users ask questions like “What are the best running shoes under $100?” or “What’s a great gift for someone who loves pottery?”, ChatGPT can now retrieve relevant product lists from the web and present them directly.

Crucially, these results are positioned as AI-ranked based on relevance to the query—rather than being ordered by ads or promotional placements—emphasizing a non-sponsored experience.

In September 2025, OpenAI announced a partnership with Shopify to bring in a massive catalog of commerce data. Shopify can provide real-time pricing, inventory availability, product images, and variations—allowing ChatGPT to search across hundreds of millions of items that exist across Shopify-powered merchants.

In practice, this means that when ChatGPT recommends a product based on a user’s description, it can be matching against an enormous product database. As Shopify’s product leadership has noted, discovery is increasingly happening inside AI conversations—not only through traditional search or advertising—and ChatGPT is naturally positioned to turn interest into purchase intent.

For consumers, this creates a new kind of “shopping mode”: instead of bouncing between multiple e-commerce sites, users can describe what they need in ChatGPT and receive a curated shortlist that blends information across merchants.

OpenAI has pushed even further with “Instant Checkout,” enabling true in-chat purchasing. When a recommended item supports instant buying, users can see a “Buy” button alongside the product.

Clicking it allows the user to confirm the order, enter shipping and payment details, and complete the purchase directly within the chat—without being redirected to an external website.

To enable this flow, OpenAI partnered with Stripe and developed an agent-style commerce protocol (Agentic Commerce Protocol). In this model, ChatGPT acts as a “digital shopping assistant,” securely passing order, address, and payment information to the merchant’s backend—like a virtual personal shopper completing the transaction on your behalf.

Even before official in-chat buying, ChatGPT had already explored commerce through plugins. After the plugin platform opened, shopping-related tools emerged—for example, Instacart plugins that could generate a recipe and place a grocery order, or Klarna tools that could compare pricing and deals across retailers.

However, plugins require users to install and invoke them manually. By integrating directly with Shopify and enabling native search-to-checkout, OpenAI reduces friction and makes the experience feel seamless.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT’s app directory (an “Apps” marketplace) has expanded, letting users browse and discover published GPTs and plugins directly inside the conversation interface.

ChatGPT can also surface relevant tools proactively. If users begin discussing “booking flights and hotels,” the system may suggest a travel booking app that can be invoked instantly.

This ecosystem—especially the connections to merchants, brands, and commerce partners—makes ChatGPT increasingly resemble a universal entry point: product discovery, comparison, and purchase can all happen end-to-end within a single interface.

03 Platformization and the Road to a Super App

To build an AI platform, OpenAI is simultaneously partnering across social and commerce (Stripe for payments, Shopify for product data) while also stepping into direct competition with established giants.

The goal is clear: capture the future “front door” to information, communication, and consumption—making ChatGPT the central hub users rely on daily.

Taken together, these features and partnerships show ChatGPT accelerating toward platformization, with a growing “super app” profile.

On the ecosystem side, OpenAI is turning ChatGPT from a model into an application platform: opening developer tooling, supporting plugins and specialized GPTs, and building a marketplace where users can discover and install third-party capabilities—similar in spirit to an App Store.

OpenAI has also signaled plans to share revenue with creators of popular GPTs, incentivizing individuals and businesses to build on the platform. If executed well, this can attract more developers, produce “killer” experiences, and create a positive feedback loop that strengthens the ecosystem.

On the product side, ChatGPT now brings together chat, search, work, creation, and shopping into one destination. Its multimodal capabilities—handling text, code, images, and voice—cover a wide range of daily digital needs.

At the same time, group chats, Projects, and GPT sharing introduce social and collaboration layers. ChatGPT is no longer only a space where a user interacts with AI; it is increasingly a place where users interact with each other through AI, collaborating and creating together.

With group chats and shared Projects, ChatGPT begins to overlap with tools like Slack or Discord in certain scenarios—either competing with them or becoming integrated into similar workflows.

On commerce, ChatGPT is moving from recommendation and price comparison to full purchase and payment loops. A useful comparison is WeChat, which became a super app by combining messaging, content sharing, and payments into one tightly integrated experience.

ChatGPT’s trajectory has parallels: conversation as the core interface, layered with mini-app-like tools (plugins/GPTs), integrated payments, and potential social feeds and content creation.

If ChatGPT’s social network effects strengthen—combined with existing voice interaction, image generation, knowledge Q&A, and document editing (such as Canvas)—users could increasingly treat it as an “AI version of WeChat” or even an “operating system for the AI era,” where everything from chatting and meetings to writing reports, shopping, and consuming information happens in one place with AI support.

That kind of breadth and stickiness is exactly what defines a super app.

Platformization also strengthens OpenAI’s moat. As user preferences accumulate, third-party tools multiply, and merchants and developers build into the ecosystem, ChatGPT becomes more than a better model—it becomes an ecosystem advantage.

The more users rely on it, the harder it is to replace. The more developers build on it, the more defensible the platform becomes. This network effect could help cement OpenAI’s leadership in general AI—and position it as the next cross-industry super platform.

04 Monetization and the Logic Behind a Trillion-Dollar Valuation

OpenAI is actively building a diversified monetization engine to support its high R&D costs and ambitious growth trajectory. Key revenue streams include:

Subscription revenue: Since launching ChatGPT Plus in 2023 at $20/month, consumer subscriptions have generated meaningful cash flow. In 2025, OpenAI added higher-priced tiers such as ChatGPT Pro, as well as Business/Enterprise offerings for organizations.

Enterprise and API revenue: Through Azure OpenAI and direct API licensing, OpenAI powers model access and customized solutions for a wide range of businesses. For example, Microsoft’s integration of GPT capabilities into Office Copilot and GitHub Copilot involves licensing and usage economics, while many startups build products directly on OpenAI’s interfaces.

This segment is growing quickly and provides a strong B2B cash-flow complement to consumer subscriptions.

Platform distribution and revenue share: As the ChatGPT Apps ecosystem matures, OpenAI could take a percentage from in-app purchases or subscriptions—similar to Apple’s App Store model.

OpenAI has already indicated it is exploring pathways for developers to sell digital services or content through ChatGPT. Once monetization opens at scale, OpenAI can become the “platform toll collector,” taking a share of the ecosystem’s transaction volume.

At the same time, OpenAI’s plan to reward creators based on usage suggests a structured incentive pool that drives supply—while still allowing OpenAI to retain a portion as platform margin.

Amazon Marketplace commissions are often cited in the 8–15% range and generate tens of billions annually. Even at lower rates, ChatGPT’s ability to aggregate commerce across the web gives it a path into a multi-trillion-dollar global e-commerce market. Capturing even a tiny fraction could still translate into substantial absolute revenue.

Additionally, the Stripe-backed agentic commerce protocol may open the door to payment-related revenue participation over time.

That mix mirrors the combined playbook of major internet giants—Microsoft-style enterprise subscriptions, Apple-style platform distribution, Amazon-style commerce economics, Google-style ads, and Tencent-style payments and value-added services.

This is why capital markets assign outsized expectations. In October 2025, OpenAI’s valuation reportedly reached around $500 billion during employee share transactions. Some reports suggest OpenAI explored fundraising at a $750 billion valuation, with ambitions to reach a trillion-dollar IPO in the coming years.

The valuation logic isn’t purely based on current financials—it’s a bet on future control of the digital “center.” If ChatGPT becomes the next foundational platform after Windows and Android, it could serve hundreds of millions—eventually billions—of users while linking work, life, and commerce into a unified AI-driven interface.

From a revenue standpoint, if OpenAI can gain meaningful presence in search advertising (potentially at the $100B scale), earn commissions from commerce (tens of billions), and sustain enterprise plus subscriptions (tens of billions), total revenue could approach $100B over time.

At a typical big-tech revenue multiple, a trillion-dollar market cap becomes plausible—assuming OpenAI can maintain technical leadership, navigate regulation, and build a durable ecosystem.

None of this will be easy. Google, Meta, and Amazon are formidable competitors. Re-walking the super-platform path means not only matching what they built, but doing it in a way that feels more advanced, more trusted, and more indispensable.

And as other AI-native apps copy this trajectory—building group chat features and enabling commerce—the fight for the next “super入口” will only intensify.
