In the early hours of December 29, Algeria defeated Burkina Faso 1-0 in Group E of the Africa Cup of Nations. Riyad Mahrez scored the only goal as Algeria secured 6 points from 2 group matches, becoming the third team to qualify for the round of 16. Goalkeeper Luka Zidane started both matches and kept consecutive clean sheets, showcasing remarkable consistency.

At 27, Luka is the most talented of Zinedine Zidane’s four sons and currently plays for Spanish Segunda División side Granada. In September, he chose to represent Algeria internationally and made his debut in October’s World Cup qualifiers. In this Africa Cup, he kept a clean sheet in Algeria’s 3-0 win over Sudan and repeated the feat against Burkina Faso.

Statistics show Luka Zidane is the first Algerian goalkeeper in 29 years to keep clean sheets in his first two Africa Cup matches, a record previously held by Haniched in 1996.

The match took place at Morocco’s Prince Moulay Hassan Stadium, attended by 18,522 spectators. Zinedine Zidane watched from the VIP box with his family, witnessing his son’s stellar performance. As a Frenchman with Algerian heritage, Luka’s choice to represent Algeria proves ideal. Next June-July, Algeria will compete in the North American World Cup, where Luka is expected to remain the starting goalkeeper. For the Zidane family, Algeria has now become a “second home team.”
