Lei Jun Faces Internal Share Selling Challenge: Lin Bin to Cash Out $2 Billion

Lin Bin, co-founder and vice chairman of Xiaomi, announced plans to gradually sell up to $2 billion of shares over the next few years. While the announcement emphasized personal asset management, the market reacted swiftly: Xiaomi's stock came under pressure, and investor sentiment was shaken.
This marks the largest systematic cash-out by Xiaomi’s founding team to date, spread over four years, with a maximum of $500 million per year. Unlike Tencent’s Ma Huateng, who faced external shareholder selling, Lei Jun’s challenge is more sensitive due to internal shareholding, while Xiaomi’s buyback capacity remains limited at HKD 5.8 billion in 2025.
Xiaomi is currently in a “phones + EVs” high-burn phase. Lei Jun must rely on EV business growth and strong financial reports to offset the market pressure from Lin Bin’s share selling.
