Simeone Becomes a “Striker Black Hole” as 24-Year-Old Almada Seeks Exit, Brazilian Giants Eye a Move

Spanish media reports suggest Atlético Madrid’s struggles have become increasingly hard to ignore—especially after failing to get past a Real Madrid side that is itself still searching for top form in the Spanish Super Cup. The commentary is blunt: if Real Madrid and Barcelona operate at their usual level, Atlético under Diego Simeone may find it extremely difficult to consistently compete for major titles moving forward.

A major talking point in these reports is Simeone’s system and its impact on attackers. Critics argue that Atlético has effectively become a “black hole” for forwards—particularly technical, flair-driven attackers—where offensive talents arrive with promise but end up looking ordinary. João Félix is often cited as a prime example, having missed crucial development years at the club, while Julián Álvarez is portrayed as a player whose winning momentum has slowed significantly since joining Atlético. Now, the spotlight turns to Thiago Almada, who is also beginning to consider an exit due to limited opportunities.

Almada is 24—an age widely seen as ideal for earning regular minutes and accelerating development. Standing at 1.71m, right-footed, and typically deployed as a left winger, he is valued at around €20 million on Transfermarkt and is under contract with Atlético until 2030.

This season, Almada has made 11 La Liga appearances, but only four of them were starts. Across those matches, he has logged 429 minutes, contributing two goals and one assist. In the UEFA Champions League, his role has been even smaller: just three substitute appearances totaling 60 minutes, with no goal involvement.

According to Argentine outlet TyC Sports, Almada has been frustrated by the lack of consistent playing time since arriving last summer, when Atlético reportedly paid around €21 million to sign him from Brazilian club Botafogo. With a strong desire to become a regular starter, the player is now said to be pushing for a transfer away from Atlético.

Brazilian powerhouse Palmeiras are reportedly the leading contender to land Almada. The club is said to be exploring a deal to purchase 50% of his rights at a valuation of around €20 million—effectively pricing that share at a premium. Palmeiras would like to complete the move in the winter window, and Almada is also eager to leave during this period to regain a central role and prepare at full speed for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Palmeiras are not alone. Another Brazilian giant, Flamengo, is also reported to be monitoring the situation closely and could emerge as a serious rival in the race for Almada’s signature.
