The women’s singles draw at the 2026 WTT Doha Champions produced its biggest shock so far. In a quarterfinal completed on January 10, top seed and world No. 2 Wang Manyu battled through seven games but fell 3–4 to Germany’s Chinese-born veteran Han Ying, exiting the tournament earlier than expected. The loss not only ended Wang’s first event of the new year, but also significantly disrupted China’s plans for the upper half of the bracket.

At 42 years and 256 days old, Han Ying’s victory made her the oldest player to reach a WTT Champions semifinal. Her post-match comments revealed the mindset that powered the upset. Han admitted she had never beaten Wang before, and her best prior result was taking just one game off her. Because of that, she said her initial goal for this match was simply to “win two games.” That pressure-free approach—playing point by point with nothing to lose—allowed her to compete with remarkable freedom and composure.

Han added that it was only after she unexpectedly captured the third game that she truly began to believe she could go toe-to-toe with Wang. Her steady, low-profile “build as you go” strategy stood in sharp contrast to Wang’s heavier championship expectations, creating a clear psychological difference as the match tightened.

Wang’s defeat was not the result of a single issue, but a combination of technical execution, tactical dynamics, and in-the-moment form. From a technical perspective, repeated errors on her forehand side proved especially costly. In fact, Wang had previously acknowledged that “too many forehand mistakes” was an area she needed to improve. Against Han’s changing spin and stubborn, high-quality defense, that vulnerability was magnified—particularly in key rallies, where several unforced forehand attacks sailed long at critical moments.
