Panama City, Jan 12 — Officials said U.S. and Panamanian forces will begin a new round of joint training on Monday local time, aimed at strengthening their ability to protect the Panama Canal, a strategically vital global shipping route.

Reports noted that Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino declared on Jan 2 that tensions between Panama and the United States had eased. Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly threatened to “take back” the canal and claimed it was being controlled by China, drawing international attention.

In a statement, Panama’s Ministry of Public Security said the exercises will be held at Panamanian air force and naval bases. Around 50 U.S. Navy personnel and 61 units from Panama’s air force, navy, and police will take part. The ministry added that the drill follows three similar joint exercises conducted in 2025.
