The U23 Asian Cup has reached its decisive stage, with two semifinals, a third-place match, and the final remaining. On January 20, China, Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam will battle for two places in the final. Given Vietnam’s cultural ties to East Asia, the semifinals have even been dubbed an “East Asian Four-Nation Cup” by fans.

Unlike Japan and South Korea, both former champions, or Vietnam, a past runner-up, China are making their first-ever appearance in the U23 Asian Cup semifinals—and they have done so as a fourth-seeded team. Only three teams have previously achieved this feat, with Iraq in 2013 being the only side to go on and win the title.

China’s achievement is even more remarkable considering they have advanced without conceding a single goal. They are only the third team in tournament history to reach the semifinals with a perfect defensive record, following Saudi Arabia in 2022 and Uzbekistan in 2024. Advancing with just one goal scored, China’s run has been described as nothing short of extraordinary.

Japan’s Soccer Digest praised China’s performance, stating that the team “built a Great Wall in front of their goal.” Despite being outmatched statistically, China managed what the outlet called “a miracle that should not have been possible on paper,” highlighting the team’s defensive discipline and tactical execution.

Vietnamese media, however, have taken a more sarcastic tone, pointing out that China scored only once, while Vietnam netted eight goals across four matches to reach the semifinals. This contrast sets the stage for a classic clash between defense and attack.

The semifinal will kick off at 11:30 p.m. on January 20, with CCTV5 confirming a late schedule change to broadcast the match live. Fans should note the later kickoff time, as China had previously played earlier evening matches.

The AFC has also announced the referee assignments. Australian official Alexander King will serve as head referee, supported by an Australian assistant crew, with VAR officials from Singapore and Thailand. King is well known to Chinese fans for his experience in the Chinese Super League and AFC competitions. His officiating style, which favors physical play and match continuity, is generally seen as positive news for China ahead of this crucial encounter.
