On January 22, according to CNBC, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan stated that combating AI-generated “junk content” and detecting deepfakes will be YouTube’s top priority in 2026.
In his annual letter, Mohan noted that with the rapid rise of AI-generated content, distinguishing real from synthetic content is becoming increasingly difficult, and the risks of deepfakes are particularly serious. YouTube is upgrading its infrastructure to meet growing computational demands, while enhancing the Gemini model and expanding AI capabilities across both commercial and consumer products.
As one of the world’s largest user-generated content platforms, YouTube is directly impacted by the surge in AI videos. A large volume of low-quality, repetitively generated AI junk content has become a common industry challenge. YouTube, Meta, and TikTok all rely on AI recommendation systems to keep users engaged through highly personalized content.
Mohan emphasized that the line between creative activity and technological capability is blurring. YouTube continues to upgrade its anti-spam and anti-clickbait systems to curb low-quality, repetitive AI content and has already seen progress. AI-generated videos are clearly labeled, creators are required to disclose AI modifications, and harmful content violating platform policies is removed.
In December 2025, YouTube rolled out a “similarity detection” feature to help millions of creators identify unauthorized deepfake use of their faces. Mohan stressed that AI is a tool to assist, not replace, human creativity. By December 2025, over 1 million channels were using YouTube’s AI creation tools daily on average.
Going forward, YouTube will expand AI applications in content creation, with Shorts as a focal point. Creators will be able to generate Shorts using their likeness, create games via text prompts, and explore AI music creation, directly competing with TikTok and Instagram Reels.
