Deep in Debt and Once Rumored to Beg on His Knees, Li Yapeng Still Holds On to His Last Dignity

In January 2026, in Beijing’s Wangjing district, Li Yapeng stood before a building whose sign had been removed overnight. Facing the camera, he said quietly: “The Yanran Angel Children’s Hospital is gone.”

The sign was taken down due to unpaid rent. At the time, Li was struggling with gout and heavy debt—his physical condition mirroring his life. Once a beloved idol from Cherish Our Love Forever, later known for iconic roles and as the former husband of Faye Wong, Li’s journey has been marked by constant tension between ideals and reality.

He once summed himself up with a single line: “My ideals have always outweighed my abilities.”

That line runs through his life. From organizing a rock concert at 22 and giving away all the profits, to founding the Yanran Angel Children’s Hospital after his daughter was born with cleft lip and palate, Li repeatedly chose meaning over calculation.

The hospital, China’s first non-profit children’s hospital of its kind, has performed over ten thousand surgeries—most free of charge. It was never meant to generate profit, nor to belong to any individual. And because of that, donations cannot be used to cover rent.

In contrast, Li’s business ventures—tech startups, film investments, real estate, and the ambitious Snow Mountain Art Town—collapsed one after another, leaving him with massive personal liabilities.

A 31-minute video released in early 2026 unexpectedly reversed public opinion. Donations surged past 20 million yuan in days. Critics softened. Admirers returned. Yet the core dilemma remained unchanged.

Li accepts that dreams can fail. Still, he insists they matter.

“Even if a dream fades,” he said, “it remains a movement in the symphony of our lives.”

Li Yapeng may not represent success, but he embodies something rarer: a man who never stopped believing that life should be lived with purpose—even at great cost.
