Manchester United Line Up a £200m Defensive Midfield Revamp: Up to Four Signings Planned This Year, with Carrick Advising as the “Iron Midfielder” Puts Himself Forward Again

According to talkSPORT, Manchester United are planning an aggressive summer rebuild of their midfield, with the club targeting Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, and Carlos Baleba. United hope to sign two of the three and have reportedly set aside a transfer budget in excess of £200 million to get the job done, with each player valued between £80 million and £100 million.

As former interim manager Ralf Rangnick once described it, the club has long known that the midfield requires “open-heart surgery.” Despite strong pushes from Ruben Amorim last summer to reinforce the middle of the pitch, Manchester United ultimately prioritised attacking signings instead. Financial constraints at the time forced the club to shelve its midfield plans.

This year, however, the pressure is firmly on Jim Ratcliffe and the INEOS-led leadership team. Sporting director Jason Wilcox and recruitment chief Christopher Vivell face little room for error as they attempt to reshape the midfield. Missing out on Champions League qualification has already dented revenues, making this rebuild a critical test of the club’s new hierarchy.

A decision on whether to move in the winter transfer window has not yet been finalised. Former Leicester City enforcer Wilfred Ndidi, now 29, has once again offered himself to United. Although the club previously rejected approaches from his representatives, the Nigeria international is eager to return to the Premier League and remains hopeful for another chance.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the situation, explaining that Manchester United have again been presented with the possibility of a loan move for Ndidi, though no breakthrough has been made. The club is continuing to assess midfield options and may act late in the window if the right opportunity emerges. For now, nothing is guaranteed, but discussions are ongoing.

Following Sunday’s away trip to Arsenal, United will not play again until February, giving them a full week to consider whether to pursue a last-minute deal. While Michael Carrick does not have final authority over transfers, his opinion will carry weight—particularly when it comes to midfield reinforcements. The 44-year-old was, after all, a cornerstone defensive midfielder during his playing days at Old Trafford.

When asked in a pre-match press conference whether he would discuss midfield recruitment with the club’s board, Carrick made it clear he sees that as part of his responsibility. He stressed that contributing to long-term decisions for the club is something he takes seriously and will approach with full commitment.

Carrick also acknowledged his natural bias as a former midfielder, but emphasised that his involvement goes beyond personal preference. In his view, ensuring the club makes the right strategic choices for future development is essential, and he intends to play his role in those discussions in an appropriate and constructive way.

Reports suggest Manchester United will prioritise players with proven Premier League experience to reduce the risk of new signings struggling to adapt. Over the past 20 years, the club has actually spent relatively modestly on defensive midfielders—around £218 million since 2006, a figure that includes Carrick himself. More than half of that total, however, was spent on Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte alone.

British media claim Casemiro could leave on a free transfer to LA Galaxy, while Ugarte has yet to live up to expectations since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain for £52 million.

Among United’s former first-choice defensive midfielders, Carrick has moved into management, Nemanja Matić continues to play for Olympique Lyonnais, Morgan Schneiderlin now serves as sporting director at RC Strasbourg, and Owen Hargreaves works as a pundit for TNT Sports.

Finally, Daily Mail reports that if Ugarte departs this summer—and considering the uncertain futures of Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo—Manchester United could, in an extreme scenario, sign as many as four midfielders. A more realistic outcome would be two or three additions. Either way, for a club that has neglected its midfield for years, this rebuild may prove decisive in determining whether United’s long-awaited revival finally takes shape.
