Zero interventions from Los Angeles to New York: Tesla FSD completes the “Cannonball Run” challenge.

January 26 — A Tesla Model S equipped with Full Self-Driving (FSD) has completed the first-ever fully autonomous, zero-intervention Cannonball Run, driving from Los Angeles to New York without any human control. The milestone marks the first time Tesla’s FSD system has successfully completed the iconic 3,000-mile coast-to-coast route end to end.

According to The Drive, the journey was carried out using a 2024 Model S powered by Tesla’s AI4 chip and running FSD version 14.2.2.3. The drive began in Redondo Beach, California, and ended in Midtown Manhattan, covering a total of 3,081 miles (approximately 4,958 km). The attempt was led by former automotive journalist and investor Alex Roy, alongside a small team of autonomous driving specialists.

Roy stated that the FSD system handled all driving tasks throughout the trip, including highway cruising, lane changes, navigation, and operation in adverse weather conditions. The total travel time was 58 hours and 22 minutes, with an average speed of around 64 mph (103 km/h). Charging accounted for roughly 10 hours of the total duration. The team only intervened to clean the vehicle’s cameras during stops to ensure optimal sensor performance.

Notably, the record-setting drive took place during winter, adding further difficulty. The vehicle successfully navigated snow, ice, slush, rain, and freezing temperatures, underscoring the system’s robustness under challenging real-world conditions.

Posting on X after the drive, Roy praised the consistency of the FSD system, suggesting the trip could have been completed even faster without human occupants. “Elon Musk was right,” he wrote. “Once autonomous driving is mature, human input becomes the biggest source of error. Human decisions added hours and hundreds of extra miles, while FSD remained smooth and predictable throughout.”

Roy had previously attempted the Cannonball Run using FSD-equipped vehicles in December 2024 and February 2025, but both efforts required human intervention. This latest success is widely seen as a significant milestone in Tesla’s autonomous driving development.
