(KUALA LUMPUR, 26th) Malaysia’s stock market rallied strongly today, moving in tandem with gains in the currency market. By the midday break, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI stood at 1,740.40 points, up 20.41 points or 1.18%, marking its highest level since Oct 10, 2018.

In the foreign-exchange market, the ringgit strengthened notably to 3.9695 against the U.S. dollar, appreciating by 1.00%. It also traded at 3.1267 versus the Singapore dollar.

Market breadth was positive in the morning session, with several sector indices rising by more than 1%. The financial services index gained 1.7%, while the construction and consumer indices advanced 1.3% and 1.1% respectively.

Technology stocks, however, came under pressure. The tech index fell 1.5%, largely due to the stronger ringgit. As part of the sector’s revenue is earned overseas, a firmer ringgit against the U.S. dollar can reduce foreign-exchange gains, weighing on some tech counters.

As of the midday break, trading volume reached 1.9583 billion shares with turnover of RM1.95086 billion. The market saw 467 gainers, 589 decliners, and 484 counters unchanged.
