Australian Open Women’s Semifinal Lineup Takes Shape: Sabalenka Dominates, Gauff Eliminated

On January 27, the women’s singles quarterfinal matches in the top half of the Australian Open draw concluded, with Aryna Sabalenka and Elina Svitolina both securing victories to advance to the semifinals. Notably, both players remain undefeated this season with perfect 10–0 records, and neither has dropped a set in Melbourne so far.

Sabalenka delivered a commanding performance against tournament dark horse Jović. She raced to a 3–0 lead in the opening set and held her nerve in the ninth game, saving three break points before closing out the set 6–3. In the second set, she gave her opponent no chance, winning six consecutive games to seal a ruthless 6–0 victory.

The win marks Sabalenka’s fourth consecutive Australian Open semifinal appearance, her sixth straight Grand Slam semifinal, her eighth consecutive hard-court Grand Slam semifinal, and the 14th Grand Slam semifinal of her career—highlighting her remarkable consistency at the top level.

In the other quarterfinal, Svitolina was equally impressive against Coco Gauff. After a tight start at 1–1, she reeled off five straight games to take the first set 6–1. She then stormed to a 3–0 lead in the second set and broke serve in the eighth game to close out a 6–2 win.

This is Svitolina’s first-ever Australian Open semifinal, her first Grand Slam semifinal in two and a half years, and the fourth of her career, matching her personal best at major tournaments.

In the semifinals, top seed Sabalenka will face 12th seed Svitolina for a place in the final. The two have met six times previously, with Sabalenka leading the head-to-head 5–1. She has also won their last four encounters, giving her a clear psychological edge heading into the clash.
