Mourinho’s Prediction Comes True! Turkish Player Scores Stunning Free Kick, But Referee Says “I Didn’t See It”

Recently, the officiating standards in Turkish football have come under sharp scrutiny again. In a Turkish third-division match, a player scored a spectacular free kick, only for it to be ruled invalid because the referee claimed he didn’t see it.
The match featured league leaders Sebat hosting third-placed Fatsa. By the 80th minute, Sebat had scored twice, leading 2-0. In the 82nd minute, Fatsa earned a prime-positioned free kick in the attacking third.
Fatsa players #54 and #10 lined up to confuse the opposition. Ultimately, #54 Brukba took a direct shot, sending the ball soaring in a perfect arc into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper helpless. However, after bouncing, the ball rolled out of the goal.
Fatsa players erupted in celebration, ready to quickly restart play and chase another goal. Yet the referee blew the whistle, disallowing the strike—he simply did not see the ball cross the line due to the angle.
Fatsa protested vehemently, but the referee stood firm, and the game continued. Fatsa eventually lost 0-2 away, remaining third in the league, while Sebat remained unbeaten after 18 rounds (14 wins, 4 draws), comfortably holding first place.
During his tenure at Fenerbahçe, Mourinho had repeatedly criticized the Turkish league for biased refereeing and match-fixing. His warnings drew widespread media backlash in Turkey and led to his dismissal in August 2025. Not long after, scandals involving players and referees betting on matches shook Turkish football, proving Mourinho’s early concerns were well-founded.
