Maguire Contract Talks Stall as Ratcliffe Questions His Age; Rúben Neves Deal Now Off the Table

Harry Maguire has returned from injury in impressive fashion, playing a pivotal role in Manchester United’s victories over Manchester City and Arsenal. His display at the Emirates earned him Man of the Match honors, winning every duel on the night. Despite this resurgence, United have yet to decide whether to extend his contract, which expires this summer, with senior figures divided over his future.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the main obstacle lies with club owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The INEOS chairman reportedly believes Maguire is entering the final stage of his career, with the England international turning 33 in March. Ratcliffe is said to view young defenders Leny Yoro (20) and Eden Heaven (19) as the long-term foundation of United’s back line. Should experience be required, Lisandro Martínez and Matthijs de Ligt are also considered reliable options, with the Dutchman sharing stylistic similarities with Maguire.
However, many within the club remain firmly in Maguire’s corner. Over the past year, when fit and focused, he has consistently performed at an elite Premier League level. Beyond matchday contributions, his influence at Carrington has been invaluable, mentoring young talents such as Yoro, Heaven, and academy winger Shea Lacey.
With Casemiro already confirming his departure this summer, United’s leadership group is thinning rapidly. Losing Maguire would further weaken an already fragile dressing-room hierarchy. Critics have questioned whether Ratcliffe—despite his passion for football—fully grasps the importance of senior figures within a rebuilding squad.
United are currently prioritizing reinforcements in other areas, meaning centre-back is not at the top of the shopping list. Combined with the injury histories of Martínez and De Ligt, allowing Maguire to leave on a free transfer—especially after decisive performances in major fixtures—would appear counterintuitive.
Now 32, Maguire is free to negotiate with foreign clubs due to the absence of an automatic extension clause. His agency, Triple S Management, has already opened talks with several European sides. Nonetheless, Maguire remains reluctant to move abroad, citing family considerations and his belief that staying at United offers the best chance of retaining his England place.
Meanwhile, United’s January transfer ambitions have also taken a hit. Two potential deals—Mohamed Kader Meïté and Rúben Neves—have effectively collapsed due to Saudi Pro League leaders Al Hilal. Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Hilal’s €30 million bid secured Meïté from Rennes, while Neves is now close to signing a new contract until 2029, ending any realistic hopes of a return to Europe.
