On January 30, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius declined a proposal from the Trump administration to relocate the company’s headquarters to the U.S. The U.S. Commerce Secretary had offered tax breaks and other incentives, but Källenius stated, “Mercedes’ century-old legacy is deeply rooted in Swabia, and this foundation should not be uprooted.”
While the headquarters will remain in Germany, Mercedes will shift some SUV production to its Tuscaloosa, Alabama plant and expand R&D in the U.S., including a new center in Georgia, strengthening its presence in the American market.
Trump-era auto tariffs have already cost Mercedes around $420 million, with potential for higher losses if trade tensions worsen. The refusal to move headquarters signals that Mercedes’ strategic focus remains in Germany.
