102-Minute Uncut Release of Royal Tramp II: How Much Box Office Can Stephen Chow’s “Classic Re-Run” Still Generate?

As the 2026 Lunar New Year film season approaches, major releases are lining up—leaving pre-holiday cinemas unusually quiet. That calm was disrupted by the announcement that Royal Tramp II, starring Stephen Chow, will return to theaters on February 7 in a fully restored 4K, uncut 102-minute version.
Yet nostalgia no longer guarantees box office success. The 2025 re-release of Royal Tramp struggled commercially, earning barely over one million RMB in total. Today’s audience—largely younger moviegoers—has a weaker emotional connection to classic Hong Kong slapstick comedy.
Despite common misconceptions, these re-releases are not driven by Stephen Chow himself. Most of his 1990s films are owned by studios, and the decision to remaster and re-screen them is purely commercial. Chow’s own copyrighted works, such as The Mermaid, have never been repeatedly reissued.
While re-releases help cinemas survive slow periods, they are only temporary solutions. What audiences truly want is new work. Chow has not stopped creating—The Mermaid 2 remains delayed, but his latest project, Women’s Soccer, has completed production and is expected to premiere in summer 2026.
The re-release of Royal Tramp II may be a modest nostalgia play, but it also highlights a lasting truth: Stephen Chow’s influence endures, even if his cinematic peak belongs to a bygone era.
