The Zhang Yuqi controversy escalates again—after staying silent, she finally stops worrying about “keeping up appearances.”

Recently, both Zhang Yuqi and Jin Chen have found themselves at the center of public controversy.

Jin Chen was reported by paparazzi to be involved in a traffic accident allegedly followed by a hit-and-run, the use of a stand-in, and insurance fraud. On the first day the news broke, she remained silent, prompting speculation online. Some netizens suggested she was following Zhang Yuqi’s strategy of silence, while others joked that the scandal had conveniently shifted attention away from Zhang Yuqi.

However, Jin Chen quickly took a different approach. On the second day, she released a detailed statement explaining the incident and shared photos of her injuries. A subsequent police report clarified the situation, and brands that had temporarily removed her endorsements reinstated them, allowing the crisis to subside.

Zhang Yuqi’s case, by contrast, has escalated. Despite being exposed earlier, she has yet to respond publicly. Many netizens interpret her silence as a sign that she has chosen not to address public opinion.

The allegations stem largely from Ge Xiaoqian, the ex-wife of Zhang Yuqi’s former husband, Yuan Bayuan. Since 2024, Ge has repeatedly accused Zhang online, recently intensifying her claims and presenting what she describes as evidence. Her accusations include interfering in a marriage, instructing lawyers to intimidate her, and allegedly using surrogacy. Among these, the surrogacy allegation is considered the most serious and could be career-ending if proven true.

Given past precedents in the entertainment industry, many expected a swift response from Zhang Yuqi or her management team. Surprisingly, neither Zhang nor her manager, Yang Tianzhen, has spoken publicly. Ge Xiaoqian has even openly challenged Yang online, proposing several public relations strategies—yet still received no response.

Before this controversy, Zhang Yuqi was widely regarded as outspoken and principled, known for publicly criticizing unethical behavior, gender discrimination, and workplace injustice. Ironically, when faced with accusations herself, she has chosen silence.

As the lack of response continues, consequences have followed: growing public boycotts, her removal from Liaoning TV’s Spring Festival Gala lineup, brands cutting ties by deleting endorsement content, and reports suggesting that variety shows featuring her are reconsidering her participation.

Regardless of whether official investigations follow, the damage has already been done. The full truth remains unclear, but for a public figure, confronting controversy rather than avoiding it may be the only way to limit further fallout.
