OpenAI Ready to Introduce Ads in ChatGPT: Answers Stay Unaltered, User Data Won’t Be Sold

IT Home reported on February 1 that OpenAI has previously confirmed it is testing advertising in ChatGPT, targeting both the free tier and the $8/month Go plan. New signs now suggest the feature has begun rolling out in an early form—at least on Android.

According to users on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI has prepared a full-screen onboarding page that introduces how ads will work inside ChatGPT. In this explainer, the company emphasizes that ads will not alter ChatGPT’s responses, and that promotional content will be clearly labeled and visually separated from the conversation.

While OpenAI says ChatGPT will not share your personal information with advertisers, the company notes that your current conversation may still influence what type of promoted ads appear beneath responses.

To give users more control, OpenAI is also providing tools to hide ads, see why a specific ad is being shown, and clear ad-related data.

As shown in the referenced example, ads appear in a dedicated “Promoted” section. Tapping the “more options” menu offers actions such as Hide ad, Report ad, and even an option to ask ChatGPT questions about the ad.

OpenAI has previously stated that its broader goal remains unchanged: to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity. The company frames advertising as part of that effort—helping to lower the barrier to access and expand availability of AI tools.

OpenAI also reiterated that user conversations remain confidential from advertisers, and that it will not sell user data.

In addition, OpenAI has introduced a new “Ad Controls” page in Settings, allowing users to manage ad-related history and interest preferences. Users can delete advertising data without affecting existing chat history, and can toggle personalized ad recommendations on or off. However, the company notes that even with personalization turned off, the content of the current conversation may still influence what ads are shown.

Finally, OpenAI said Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers will not see ads.
