(Tokyo, 9th) Toyota announced a management reshuffle effective April 1. Current CEO Koji Sato will step down to become vice chairman and newly created chief industry officer, while CFO Kenta Kon will take over as CEO.

The move signals a stronger focus on financial discipline and profitability amid US tariff pressures and intensifying global competition. Kon, a long-time Toyota executive, previously oversaw financial strategy and served on boards including Woven by Toyota, and is known to be close to chairman Akio Toyoda.

The decision surprised analysts, given Toyota’s stable performance under Sato over the past three years. Morningstar analyst David Whiston said the shift from an engineering-led CEO to a finance-driven leader is notable.

Toyota expert Jeffrey Liker noted that rising tariffs and Chinese exports may have prompted Toyota to prioritise financial management. Despite remaining the world’s most profitable automaker, Toyota expects a US$9 billion impact this fiscal year due to tariffs.
