Carrick has won his first Premier League Manager of the Month award, but the so-called “curse” is said to be kicking in early — and sticking with one Manchester United player could be the key to breaking it.

Michael Carrick is set to be officially named Premier League Manager of the Month for January after leading Manchester United to three consecutive wins over Manchester City, Arsenal, and Fulham.

However, fans are already discussing the so-called “Manager of the Month curse.”

Several winners this season have seen sharp declines after receiving the award, including Arne Slot, Oliver Glasner, Ruben Amorim, and Enzo Maresca.

This phenomenon is not pure superstition. Football logic explains it:

  • Teams naturally fluctuate in form
  • Opponents adapt tactically
  • The Premier League allows little margin for error

Carrick’s tactical test has already begun. United were held 1-1 by West Ham, struggling against a deep defensive block.

His decision to keep the same attacking trio (Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, Cunha) worked against stronger teams but lacked aerial presence against compact defenses.

Benjamin Šeško, in red-hot form with 5 goals in 6 matches, came off the bench to score a late equalizer. Many argue he should have started.

The key difference between good and elite managers lies in timing adjustments. If Carrick adapts quickly, the “curse” may remain just a narrative.
