Israeli Bobsled Team Disqualified Amid Winter Olympics Controversy

On February 22, during the final day of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, the Israeli bobsled team was absent from the four-man bobsled event after being disqualified from the last two runs for violating sportsmanship and fairness rules.

Before the third run, original team member Uri Zisman was replaced by Ward Fawarseh. Zisman claimed he was ill, but the Israeli Olympic Committee found he was not sick.

The committee stated: “The team requested that substitute Ward Fawarseh participate. According to the rules, substitutions are allowed only if a competitor is injured or ill. A team member, encouraged by teammates, falsely claimed to be unwell, underwent a medical check, and signed a declaration to approve the substitution. Consequently, the committee revoked the request and disqualified all four athletes for violating sportsmanship and fairness.”

Israeli athlete Edelman explained on social media that the substitution would not affect results (Israel had been at the bottom), and the intent was to allow the reserve athlete to experience the Olympics.

The Israeli bobsled team has been embroiled in multiple controversies during the Games. In the two-man bobsled event, a Swiss TV commentator criticized Edelman as a “Zionist” with alleged social media activity supporting controversial policies. During the four-man event, Italian public television inadvertently aired inappropriate off-camera remarks about the Israeli team, prompting an apology and internal investigation.
