At the WTA500 Merida tournament, Zhang Shuai, who battled through the qualifiers to reach the main draw, displayed impressive form, cruising past fellow qualifier Rebecca Leppchenko 6-2, 6-1 to secure her spot in the Round of 16. In the next round, she will face defending champion and Spanish star, Paula Navarro.

After two wins in the qualifying rounds, 37-year-old Zhang faced 40-year-old Leppchenko in a classic showdown between veteran players. Zhang dominated from start to finish, allowing her opponent very few opportunities. With consistent serving and precise baseline play, she clinched a commanding 6-2, 6-1 victory. The win also earns her 60 ranking points, boosting her to world No. 69.

In the upcoming round, Zhang will take on the tournament’s second seed and defending champion Navarro. The two have met twice before on Chinese soil—at the 2024 China Open and the 2025 Wuhan Open—where Zhang holds a perfect record. Now on North American hard courts, all eyes will be on whether Zhang can extend her winning streak and continue her triumphant run.
