Out of Gas and Powerless! Lin Shidong Falls 2-4 to Lebrun, Over a Year Without a Title – Experts Say: Utter Defeat

In the WTT Singapore Grand Slam men’s singles quarterfinals, French rising star Félix Lebrun defeated Lin Shidong 4-2 to advance to the semifinals, with game scores of 【14-12, 9-11, 11-6, 11-4, 9-11, 12-10】. The 19-year-old Lebrun is ranked sixth in the world, while 20-year-old Lin Shidong is ranked third. Yet in this matchup, the world number three was completely dominated by the sixth-ranked player, leaving fans stunned.
Lin appeared exhausted in the sixth game when Lebrun had a match point at 11-10; it was clear he had no way back and seemed powerless against Lebrun’s relentless play.
The first game already shocked many fans. Lin opened aggressively, leading 6-1, but as Lebrun extended the rallies, Lin lost his rhythm. Lebrun caught up to 6-7, then 8-8, and eventually completed a comeback, winning 14-12. The third game mirrored this pattern: Lin led 4-1 but fell behind 5-9 after repeated mistakes, ultimately losing 6-11. The fourth game saw Lin collapse, trailing 1-4 and then 2-9, before Lebrun closed it 11-4. The sixth game remained tight until 7-7; Lebrun reached match point at 10-8, and though Lin saved two, he eventually fell 10-12.
Since winning the WTT Singapore Grand Slam men’s singles on February 8, 2025, Lin has gone over a year without capturing a title. Before this tournament, he had already dropped to world number three. Without improvement over the past year, his ranking may continue to slip.
After the match, veteran coach Lu Jianhua commented: “Lin Shidong was completely outplayed by Lebrun. His speed and forehand could not match the opponent, and he barely used his strong backhand. Losing under these circumstances is reasonable. Lin’s confidence is declining; it’s evident that his belief in his game is shaken.”
