Zhang Linghe Faces Criticism Over “Foundation General” Look in Zhu Yu — State Media Calls Out Beauty Standards Over Values

The Chinese historical romance drama Zhu Yu, starring Zhang Linghe and Tian Xiwei, has been generating continuous buzz since its release. Recently, the term “foundation general” trended online, sparking widespread debate.
In the series, Zhang Linghe’s portrayal of General Xie Zheng drew criticism for his overly fair and refined makeup. Netizens jokingly remarked that he “doesn’t forget to touch up his makeup even on the battlefield,” with some sarcastically calling him a “general who wakes up at 4 a.m. to prepare makeup for a 6 a.m. battle.”
The controversy quickly escalated, drawing criticism from official media, which argued that such portrayals reflect a shift from value-driven storytelling toward appearance-focused aesthetics.
An article published by PLA Daily emphasized that traditional Chinese culture has long celebrated masculinity characterized by strength, resilience, and courage. However, it noted that some modern war-themed productions have softened these portrayals, presenting generals with overly polished and delicate appearances that deviate from historical perception and authentic military spirit.
Some viewers compared this to Peter Ho’s rugged portrayal of Xiang Yu in The King’s War, highlighting the contrast between gritty realism and stylized aesthetics.
Commentary further argued that masculinity in this context represents responsibility and patriotic spirit, embodied by soldiers who endure harsh conditions without concern for appearance. While artistic expression can embrace diverse aesthetics, excessive beautification risks undermining both realism and the core values embedded in such narratives.
The official WeChat account “Zhejiang Propaganda” also addressed the issue, stating that the ridicule stems from a disconnect between character identity and visual presentation. While aligning with the original novel’s description of a refined appearance is understandable, sacrificing narrative authenticity for visual perfection can negatively influence younger audiences’ perceptions of culture and aesthetics.
Additionally, as Chinese historical dramas expand globally, such portrayals may lead to misunderstandings among international viewers unfamiliar with the cultural context.
According to Shanghai Observer, audience criticism is not directed at attractiveness itself, but at the lack of authenticity—when visual appeal begins to compromise character credibility and emotional depth.
