(Kuala Lumpur, March 29) Malaysian politician Syed Saddiq, widely known as the “nation’s sweetheart,” has announced his engagement to popular local singer-actress Bella Astillah. The proposal video he shared on March 28 quickly went viral, capturing widespread public attention.
However, amid the congratulations, Bella—who was previously divorced—became the target of harsh online comments. Some netizens used derogatory terms such as “second-hand” and “buy one get two,” sparking backlash. In response, RTM Chinese news anchor Rasyidah spoke out strongly on social media, expressing sympathy and anger: “Women are not products, nor are they accessories.”
Rasyidah congratulated the couple but criticized the toxic comments, saying such language is unacceptable: “Those who casually use terms like ‘second-hand’ or ‘buy one get two’—please stop.”
She highlighted Bella’s painful past, noting that she endured significant emotional hardship in her previous marriage, including repeated betrayals involving people close to her. “She tried to hold things together and endured public criticism, but loyalty was never returned.”
Rasyidah praised Bella’s resilience in rebuilding her life and emphasized that she deserves respect and happiness. She also commended Syed Saddiq for embracing Bella’s past and standing by her with sincerity and commitment.
Strongly condemning the mocking of women’s experiences and bodies, she described such remarks as deeply disrespectful and called for greater awareness: “Women’s strength, independence, and efforts deserve recognition.”
Quoting Mayday vocalist Ashin, she added: “Every girl has her own name.” She concluded with a heartfelt message: “Women are not commodities, not appendages, and not labels to be defined by,” while wishing the couple a happy future.
