NBA Launches Probe as Giannis Antetokounmpo Clashes with Bucks

Tensions between Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks are rapidly escalating—and now the NBA has stepped in.

The Bucks claim they want Giannis back on the court but insist he has not yet met the medical clearance required to return. Giannis, however, has taken a different stance—he says he’s ready to play but has not been granted permission.

Responding to the league’s investigation, Giannis remarked that it’s unprecedented for a player of his caliber to publicly state he wants to play, suggesting the situation deserves scrutiny.

From a competitive standpoint, Milwaukee’s season is effectively over. With a 30–47 record, they sit 11th in the East, trailing the Miami Heat by 10 games and officially out of play-in contention. Under such circumstances, the team’s cautious approach to injuries is understandable—but it also fuels the conflict.

At 31, Giannis has been plagued by injuries this season, appearing in just 36 games. Still, he’s averaging 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists on an elite 62.4% shooting—numbers that underline his superstar impact.

The bigger issue lies in contract dynamics. His current deal runs through 2028, with eligibility for a massive 4-year, $275 million extension starting this October. Notably, he holds a player option for the 2027–28 season, meaning he could enter free agency as early as 2027.

Ownership, led by Wes Edens, has already made its stance clear: either Giannis signs an extension this summer or the team will explore a trade. Losing him for nothing is not an option.

All signs point to a fractured relationship. Around the league, there’s growing belief that Giannis could become the centerpiece of a blockbuster move this offseason.

After 13 years together—including a championship run in 2021 that delivered the franchise’s second title—the partnership appears to be nearing its end.

It may not be official yet, but the direction is becoming increasingly obvious.
