(Hong Kong, April 5) Veteran actress Loretta Lee, now 60 and with over four decades in the industry, recently appeared on the program Quick Shot Man Mirror hosted by Wong Man-ling, where she reflected on her career and personal journey.
Known for her iconic photo books released more than 30 years ago, Lee shared that they still hold strong market value today, a testament to her enduring appeal.
Recalling her photo shoot days, she laughed: “We were filming in Venice, and I removed my clothes quickly for the first shot—but the crew wasn’t even ready yet. I even rushed them.” She added that the pay at the time was very attractive, especially with the influence of Japanese photo book culture, citing Rie Miyazawa as inspiration for exploring a new image.
Lee also revealed that her decision to take on Category III films was partly driven by practical needs. “My younger brother wanted to study in Canada. I also wanted to transition my career and needed the money, so I discussed it with director Ko Chi-sum before making the decision.”
Reflecting on her upbringing, she shared that she moved out at 17 due to a strict family environment, though she later spent over a decade living with her parents in their later years—a period she described as deeply meaningful and joyful.
Her romantic life, however, has been marked by ups and downs. “I didn’t gain much, but lost a lot. Still, every relationship had its happy moments,” she said, adding that she has experienced a 10-year period of being single and has grown comfortable with solitude.
Lee described herself as someone shaped by complex experiences, gaining resilience through challenges. Although she works less frequently now, she remains financially stable through brand endorsements and partnerships in China.
As for love, she remains relaxed: “I’ll let things happen naturally. I’m comfortable being on my own.” She also reflected on her past relationship with lyricist Poon Yuen-leung, noting their repeated breakups and reconciliations that ultimately did not lead to marriage.
She acknowledged facing emotional setbacks but views them as lessons in growth. “Each hardship taught me how to face life better.” Despite difficult periods, she emphasized the value of life and maintaining a positive outlook.
Lee married musician Clarence Hui in 1996, and they have a daughter together. The marriage lasted four years before ending in divorce, after which she raised her daughter independently.
