Fan’s “How to Marry Zhang Linghe” Essay Goes Viral — “Hengdian Marriage Strategy” Sparks Laughter Online

Chinese actor Zhang Linghe has skyrocketed to fame following his role in the historical drama Zhu Yu, with his Weibo following surpassing 18.42 million, cementing his status as a top-tier heartthrob. Recently, a viral satirical “paper” titled “How to Marry Zhang Linghe” has taken the internet by storm, leaving netizens amused and calling it “the most intellectual fandom moment online.”
The piece adopts a formal academic structure, blending concepts from finance and economic geography to elevate fangirling into a so-called “strategic discipline.” It humorously fabricates authoritative institutions such as the “Universal Dream Girl Federation” and the “National Idol-Chasing Strategy Research Center,” even claiming funding from fictional programs like the “National Idol Strategy Fund” and the “Hengdian Marriage Initiative.”
In its “conclusion,” the paper seriously argues that looks and fan support are merely entry-level requirements in the fandom ecosystem, while the true competitive edge lies in “hardcore knowledge and class capital.” It proposes a “geographical arbitrage” strategy, encouraging fans to relocate to cities like Shanghai or Hengdian and pursue STEM education to align with Zhang’s background, thereby increasing their chances of catching his attention.
The satire goes further by introducing financial risk management, suggesting that “idol chasing is a high-risk asset” and recommending “portfolio diversification”—for example, investing emotional energy in real-life “high-quality STEM men” to hedge against potential “Poisson jump risks” (sudden scandals or image crises involving idols).
Although entirely fictional and humorous, the piece cleverly reflects Zhang Linghe’s immense appeal among fans. Comments flooded in, with users joking, “This isn’t fandom anymore—I just want to date him,” and “After reading this, I feel unqualified to even like him.”
