Defensive Concerns Mount: Trent Alexander-Arnold Criticized for Defensive Lapses, Dani Carvajal Struggles with Injuries—Can Real Madrid Duo Make the World Cup?

According to Marca, Real Madrid right-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dani Carvajal must deliver outstanding performances in the remaining matches of the season if they hope to secure spots in the 2026 World Cup squads.
At present, neither player is firmly included in their respective national team plans.
Alexander-Arnold, 27, joined Real Madrid from Liverpool in 2025. This season, he has made 24 appearances (17 starts), providing 5 assists but no goals. While his attacking ability remains evident, his defensive consistency continues to be questioned. Notably, he has yet to feature in an official match for England since his move, with head coach Thomas Tuchel reportedly unconvinced by his current form.
Meanwhile, 34-year-old Carvajal faces an even tougher situation. Once a key figure in Real Madrid’s Champions League and La Liga successes, injuries over the past two seasons have significantly limited his playing time. He has made 19 appearances this season (8 starts), without scoring or assisting, and is no longer a guaranteed starter.
Competition within the Spain national team is also intense, with players like Marcos Llorente and Pedro Porro capable of filling the right-back role. This makes it even harder for Carvajal to impress coach Luis de la Fuente.
Overall, both players face an uphill battle. Without a significant improvement in form, their chances of making the 2026 World Cup appear uncertain.
