(Huizhou, 22nd) A recent episode of the Hong Kong TVB travel program “Trial & Truth” exposed multiple issues involving food and accommodation services in Shuangyue Bay, Huidong, Huizhou. Problems highlighted included misleading promotions, poor food quality, and potential safety risks. Following the broadcast, the Huizhou Culture and Tourism Bureau launched an investigation, and several businesses have since been penalized.

In the episode aired last Thursday (16th), hosts Elena Kong, Kalok Chow, and Tsang Chin Mong visited a seafood restaurant as regular customers. They purchased a group-buy set meal priced at RMB118 (approx. MYR68.50). The restaurant claimed the seafood was “chilled,” while “fresh” seafood required additional payment. To verify this, the team ordered extra dishes.

However, upon serving, both the set meal and additional dishes showed poor quality, with some items appearing spoiled. Several dishes did not match their descriptions. Examples included discolored mantis shrimp, substituted shellfish, minimal meat in clam dishes, sandy soup, and seafood fried rice that appeared reheated in a microwave. After lodging complaints, the restaurant agreed to issue a refund.

The episode sparked widespread criticism online, with many users accusing local businesses of damaging the area’s tourism reputation.

The program also reviewed a highly rated seaside accommodation but encountered unexpected price increases and communication issues. Room cleanliness and facilities fell short of expectations, and a strong gas odor was detected when hot water was used, raising safety concerns. The team ultimately checked out early.

In response, authorities in Huizhou announced a joint enforcement action. “Bihai Jiaoyue Apartment Management Co., Ltd.” was investigated and sealed for alleged violations of public security regulations, while “Lingxian No.1 Seafood Restaurant” was penalized, issued a warning, and ordered to suspend operations for rectification.

Officials stated that supervision of the tourism sector will be strengthened to protect consumer rights and improve service standards.
