(Kuala Lumpur, 21st) The highly anticipated rural fantasy film “Mother Earth” is set for nationwide release on May 14, bringing a mystical tale of “spirit invocation” to the big screen.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Chong Keat Aun and starring international actress Fan Bingbing, the film achieved major success at the 62nd Golden Horse Awards, winning three awards and earning eight nominations, including Best Actress, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Film Song.

To promote the release, Chong Keat Aun will lead a cast tour featuring Fan Bingbing, Bai Runyin, Natalie Hsu, and Chai Poh Chu across five Malaysian states—Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Malacca, Penang, and Kedah—from May 10 to 14.

Inspired by folklore from Kedah’s paddy villages, the film is set in the 1990s and follows a farmer who transforms into a spirit medium at night, healing villagers and confronting dark forces amid land disputes. The narrative explores themes of identity, power, and resistance across cultural and social boundaries.

Blending magical realism with strong feminist undertones, the film has also gained international recognition, competing at the 38th Tokyo International Film Festival and the 28th Udine Far East Film Festival. Fan Bingbing was honored with the “Golden Mulberry Award for Outstanding Artistic Achievement,” alongside renowned Japanese actor Koji Yakusho.
