Sonija Kwok supported by Louis Koo sparks backlash — labeled “mistress” by CP fans; manager releases detailed statement to clarify

(Hong Kong, 25th) The 44th Hong Kong Film Awards concluded successfully, but a simple act of courtesy by Louis Koo unexpectedly sparked online controversy.

During the event, Koo was seen helping Sonija Kwok down a staircase. What appeared to be a polite gesture was later overinterpreted by some fans of the “Koo–Jessica Hsuan” pairing, leading to a wave of online criticism directed at Kwok. Some even labeled her unfairly, triggering backlash.

In response, Kwok’s manager Gary Cheung issued a statement on April 22, clarifying the situation and sharing photos. He explained that the team had to walk down a long staircase, which was particularly difficult for someone in a long dress and high heels. While he initially assisted her, he stepped aside when event staff requested a clean shot, leaving her briefly unsupported. Koo then stepped in to help her safely descend.

The manager stressed that Koo’s action was purely a display of gentlemanly courtesy and that anyone would have done the same in such circumstances.

Kwok later addressed the issue personally, stating she had no intention of competing for attention or causing controversy. She emphasized her support for both the fans and the A Step into the Past team, adding, “I don’t need to fight for anything.”

Regarding her earlier deleted post, she explained it was due to misinterpretation that distorted her original message. She concluded firmly: “This post will not be deleted. I respect your idol.”

Many netizens have since come to her defense, pointing out that her character in A Step into the Past was actually the rightful partner of Koo’s character, urging others to stop online harassment and view the situation rationally.
