At the 2026 World Snooker Championship Round of 16, a highly anticipated all-Chinese clash saw Ding Junhui face defending champion Zhao Xintong. After three sessions, Ding fell 9–13, exiting the tournament and extending his streak to eight consecutive years without reaching the quarterfinals.
A pioneer of Chinese snooker, Ding has competed in the tournament 19 times, with a best finish as runner-up in 2016 and two semifinal appearances. However, inconsistent form has seen his ranking drop to world No. 16. He did manage a 10–5 win over David Gilbert in the first round, marking his first victory since late 2025.
Against Zhao, who has been in outstanding form, Ding acknowledged pre-match the difficulty of the challenge. The match, played in a best-of-25 format, was tied 4–4 after Session 1. Ding fell behind in Session 2, trailing 7–9 overall.
In the final session, Zhao maintained control and closed out the match 13–9. Ding now holds a three-match losing streak against Zhao and continues his search for a world title after 20 attempts.
Statistically, Ding was outperformed across key areas including scoring, pot success rate, long pots, and safety play.
Chinese media highlighted the broader significance of the match, noting it represents a shift from reliance on a single star to a deeper pool of contenders in Chinese snooker.
Zhao advances to face Shaun Murphy in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Wu Yize remains in contention in the Round of 16 against Mark Selby.
Despite 11 Chinese players entering the main draw, only two remain after two rounds—highlighting both progress and ongoing challenges for the nation’s snooker depth.
Trump Approves Iran Strike Plan—But Halts Action Over Key Doubt: Can Fordow Be Penetrated?
According to The Wall Street Journal and Axios, President Trump has approved a military strike plan against Iran, but hesitated to proceed due to doubts over whether U.S. bunker-buster bombs can truly destroy Iran’s fortified Fordow nuclear site. While the U.S. has the necessary weapons, Trump remains uncertain about their effectiveness and the risk of long-term entanglement. He said he prefers not to act—but won’t rule out a “surgical strike” if needed.
