Since Carrick took charge, one Man United player has regressed, now fighting for his future amid possible new striker signing

While fans often argue that a player should not be judged solely by goals and assists, Amad Diallo is facing growing scrutiny as his attacking output continues to decline. His last goal for Manchester United dates back to December 15 against Bournemouth—nearly five months ago.

During that period, the club has undergone significant changes. Ruben Amorim departed, with Michael Carrick taking over, and the tactical setup shifted from a 3-4-3 to a 4-2-3-1. Amad has been pushed further forward, a role that should, in theory, boost his attacking numbers—but the opposite has happened.

Under Carrick, Amad has started 9 of 12 matches, playing 794 minutes without registering a single goal or assist. His last assist came even earlier, in November against Tottenham. So far this season, he has just two goals and two assists—a sharp drop from last season’s eight goals and six assists.

Within the squad, his attacking contributions now lag behind players like Patrick Dorgu and even full-back Diogo Dalot in terms of assists. His place in the starting lineup is no longer secure, as seen in the recent match against Chelsea, where he spent 80 minutes on the bench.

With Bruno Fernandes back in the No. 10 role, United’s attack increasingly relies on efficiency and intelligent movement. Although Amad contributes defensively—recording 15 interceptions this season—his attacking presence has diminished, with fewer touches in the penalty area compared to last season.

Tactically, Amad thrived more under Amorim’s system, where wing-backs played a key attacking role, allowing him more space and involvement. His partnership with Bryan Mbeumo on the right flank once proved effective. Now, playing further forward, he faces tighter marking and must make quicker decisions—an area where he has struggled.

With only five games remaining, Amad’s minutes have increased, but his impact has declined. Competition is also intensifying with players like Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko in the mix.

Despite the setbacks, Amad remains positive and continues to work hard in training. The coaching staff values his effort, but in a system that prioritizes end product, he must improve his goal involvement to reclaim a consistent starting role.

Opportunities still exist, especially as United’s attack has lacked consistent output. If Amad can step up at the right moment, he may yet turn his season around and redefine his place in the team.
