Last week, Jim Ratcliffe visited Carrington to meet with Michael Carrick over tea. While questions about Carrick’s future at Manchester United continue to circulate, Ratcliffe declined to comment publicly. Carrick later revealed that the meeting was informal and supportive.
“We just had a relaxed chat,” Carrick said. “It was good to see his support—it meant a lot.”
The situation contrasts with former manager Ruben Amorim, who once joked back at Ratcliffe but was dismissed shortly after challenging the club’s authority—despite earlier backing.
On the pitch, however, United’s form has improved. The club is now within reach of Champions League qualification, and upcoming matches could secure a top-five finish. Carrick acknowledged the goal: “We’re in a good position, but staying at the top is never easy.”
A return to the Champions League carries major financial implications—potentially around £100 million in revenue—making it a decisive factor in the club’s planning. Reports suggest that securing a top-five finish could significantly boost Carrick’s chances of being appointed permanently.
Still, Ratcliffe is believed to favor a manager with strong authority and long-term leadership presence. While Carrick benefits from familiarity with the club, questions remain about whether he fits that profile.
Meanwhile, his coaching staff—including Steve Holland and Jonathan Woodgate—has performed well during this transitional phase.
Ultimately, the decision lies with Ratcliffe, who must weigh continuity against the option of appointing a more dominant managerial figure.
