"A Letter to Grandma" Tops RM8.2 Million in Malaysia After Eight Days, Director and Lead Stars Heading to Malaysia

(Kuala Lumpur, June 26) A Letter to Grandma, written and directed by Lan Hongchun, continues to enjoy remarkable success at the box office. After earning more than RMB1.7 billion (approximately RM1 billion) in China, the film has also become a hit in Malaysia, grossing RM8.2 million within just eight days of its June 18 release, making Malaysia its strongest Southeast Asian market outside China.

The film opened simultaneously in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei on June 18. It collected RM5.8 million within its first four days before surpassing RM8.2 million, establishing itself as one of the region's most talked-about Chinese-language films.

Starring Li Sitong, Wang Yantong, Wang Xiaohui, Wu Shaoqing, Zheng Runqi and Thai actress Taew (Usha Seamkhum), the film tells a heartfelt story centred on family bonds while celebrating Chaoshan culture and the history of the Nanyang Chinese community.

Its storyline revolving around qiaopi—letters and remittances sent by overseas Chinese—has also inspired many viewers to revisit old family letters and trace their ancestral roots, extending the film's emotional impact beyond the cinema.

Adding to the excitement, the production team has announced that director Lan Hongchun, together with Wang Yantong ("Musheng") and Li Sitong ("Nanzhi"), will visit Malaysia to meet audiences and share behind-the-scenes stories from the making of the film.

The announcement was met with overwhelming enthusiasm from fans, with many saying they plan to watch the film again and urging cinemas to keep it on the big screen longer.
