Trump Administration Suspends Student Visa Interviews, Expands Social Media Screening
On May 27, 2025, Politico reported that the Trump administration has ordered U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide to suspend new visa interviews for international students and exchange visitors. This decision is part of a broader effort to expand social media screening for these applicants. Previously scheduled interviews will proceed as planned, but no new interviews will be scheduled.
If fully implemented, this screening plan could significantly slow down visa processing and harm American universities that rely on international student revenue. The Trump administration had already imposed social media checks on certain student and scholar applicants, specifically targeting those who express sympathy for Palestinians or criticize U.S. and Israeli policies.
Since returning to the White House, Trump has repeatedly attacked U.S. universities, demanding they eliminate “campus antisemitism” and scrap diversity policies favoring minority groups. Many believe these efforts are aimed squarely at liberal-leaning schools like Harvard University.
