Xi Jinping Attends Russia’s 80th Anniversary Celebration of Soviet Victory in the Great Patriotic War

MOSCOW, May 9 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping attended a grand ceremony in Moscow on Thursday to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory in the Great Patriotic War. The event, hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin, was joined by leaders from over 20 countries and international organizations.

Amid the verdant bloom and vibrant banners of May in Moscow, the Victory Day celebrations took place in Red Square, capturing a solemn and grand atmosphere. President Xi arrived at the Kremlin where he was warmly welcomed by President Putin. The two leaders walked together to the main reviewing stand in Red Square to begin the commemorations.

At 10:00 a.m., the iconic chimes of the Kremlin bell tower marked the official start of the event. A military band played the famed wartime anthem “The Sacred War”, as honor guards carried the Russian national flag and the Victory Banner onto the square.

In his speech, President Putin paid tribute to the Soviet people’s immense sacrifices in defending global peace and freedom. He emphasized the importance of remembering this historical victory and praised China's resistance efforts during World War II, commending the Chinese people’s contributions to a shared future for humanity. Putin stressed that “history cannot be rewritten, and victory must not be tarnished.”

The ceremony featured a two-part military parade. The historical section showcased troops in period Soviet uniforms, carrying original flags and weapons, recreating the fervor of anti-fascist resistance. The modern section presented various branches of the Russian Armed Forces and high-tech military hardware, with the Russian Aerospace Forces flying overhead to the stirring tune of “Victory Day.” Armed forces from more than 10 countries, including China, also joined the parade. The PLA Honor Guard contingent marched in precise formation, displaying unity and high morale.

After the parade, Xi and other leaders visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Alexander Garden to lay wreaths and observe a moment of silence. They later posed for a group photo.

At noon, Xi attended a commemorative banquet hosted by President Putin.

Top Chinese officials including Cai Qi and Wang Yi were also present at the events.
